RubyShoeCreations has quality crochet purses, hats, scarves and slippers. I also have sewn items such as purses as well as the occasional paper items such as cards.

When I was 6-7 years old, maybe younger my grandma Ruby taught me to crochet. She would give me a ball of yarn and a hook and I would make chains for hours. Shortly I learned other stitches and how to read patterns. My mom was a great influence too as she sews, knits and crochets too.

My favorite part is yarn shopping! all the colors, textures, fibers!The actual crochet part is nice too, very relaxing.

My sister introduced me to Etsy afte she found it in a craft magazine and bought some stained glass for her office. I started selling about 2 1/2 years ago.

I do like my chunky hat/scarf sets in my shop right now. I got the lovely hand dyed yarn from fellow Etsian Yarntopiatreasures. I enjoy making my slippers too.

One goal for me is to complete an afghan to enter it in the county fair and win best of show. If I can do this I would be the third generation to do so. My grandmother and mother have both earned this title.

Another broader goal is to improve my Etsy shop. Find a variety of items that sell consistantly. I would love to create all day as promoting is not my favorite thing to do. Would love to find a couple wholesaler for my items so they could do the promoting for me.

1. Give us a brief summary of your shop. What do you create?

I am a mixed media artist and my work always revolves around my favorite thing...animals! I create whimsical paperclay art dolls/sculptures. Right now, i am exploring circusy figures....some have a more sophisticated "Cirque du Soleil" feel and others are more fun and folkish.

2. How did you become involved in your craft?

I discovered paperclay about 12 years ago and experimented with it...it was like magic! I started sculpting animal figures with it and fell totally in love with a new "craft".

3. Explain your favorite part of the creative process.

Hmmm....my favorite part is when a piece really comes to life with color. I adore vibrant, fun colors and patterns, so when i begin painting a doll, I get very excited! I am like a kid in a candy store when it comes to choosing colors.

4. When did you first discover etsy and begin selling?

I found out about etsy about a year ago and began posting a few cat and dog paintings that i was working on last October.

5. To date, what project are you most proud of?

There is a piece in my shop right now called The Lion and the Lamb that required many, many hours of work. It was also the first time I had sculpted human type hands. I learned this technique from a fellow dollmaker and was thrilled with the results. I think the human hands add a whole new feel to my work. It makes the viewer question whether it is an animal or a human dressed up as an animal.

6. What mistake did you make while creating that taught you something valuable?

Oh, i make mistakes all of the time, but they almost always turn out to be happy accidents. I don't do sketches of plan out my dolls....they just sort of evolve as i go. I never know what a doll is going to look like in the end.

7. Any goals, inspiration, or other thoughts you'd like to share?

I want to continue to refine and improve my sculpting skills. I need to keep pushing the envelope and let my imagination continue to go wild. My goal is always to make people say "i've never seen anything like that!". I have so many ideas...just wish there were more hours in the day!

My name is Daniel , Im the creator of the steampunk jewelry you can find at http://www.catherinetterings.etsy.com/ . Catherine Makes the Adjustable rings , Flowers rings and she is an excellent fashion graphic designer.

How did you become involved in your craft?
It's all because Catherine. About 10 month ago Catherine went to a party with some friend .They invited an artist to come teach them how to make wire wrapped rings. She made a few that night and made very cool and funky rings . After showing the rings she had made that night to some friends she received many compliments. She even made a few and sold them . Then my mother saw the rings too and told her that she should start a business , I also insisted that she should get more material. She was not convinced but i kept tell her until she bought some materials. Then she started to make many of them and selling them to everyone.One day i saw her make some rings , i tried just for fun and now i do this full-time. I Always made the more complicated designs . Someday a friend told me that my rings looked Steampunk .After some research on the subject , i came up with my original steampunk jewelry design .

When did you first discover etsy and begin selling?
About 2 weeks after Catherine started to make rings . At first i was only taking pictures and creating listing .

To date, what project are you most proud of?
ARTIFACT STEAMED - Mysterious amber and clock parts .I spent hours to drill by hand holes in the center loop to add the tiny knobby pieces.

1. Give us a brief summary of your shop. What do you create?

I create fresh photography for hip homes.

2. How did you become involved in your craft?

I began studying photography in high school, then went on to get two college diplomas in both Photography and Advanced photography.

3. Explain your favorite part of the creative process.

I love to see the finished piece! See it in different applications (on walls and cards for example) and hold it in my hands.

4. When did you first discover etsy and begin selling?

I opened my shop almost immediately after finding Etsy in February of 2008.

5. To date, what project are you most proud of?

I find I'm usually proudest of my most recent pieces. Currently my favourite is a photograph called Pure (currently available for sale in my Etsy shop), it's white with an off center heart. I just look at it and I see love.

6. What mistake did you make while creating that taught you something valuable?

I guess one of the mistakes I made quite frequently early on was that I didn't push myself. Now when I approach a subject I try to photograph it the way that I see it in my minds eye. Then, once I've captured that initial image, I push myself to try something different, whether through a new angle, different lighting, or prop adjustment, that's usually when the magic happens.

1. Give us a brief summary of your shop. What do you create? Well, I create a bunch of things! Mainly Japanese crafts, such as tsunami kanzashi (silk flowers formed by pinched and folded squares of fabric), kimono and obi. I also make screenrinted apparel, illustration prints, greeting cards and photography prints.
2. How did you become involved in your craft? I began to draw when I was about three years old, and took sewing lessons when I was seven. I've also had formal training in fine art from taking advanced placement courses in high school. During my college years, I've taken a couple of semesters of screen printing and picked up photography along the way from my major (New Media design). But much of the techniques I've learned were self-taught.

3. Explain your favorite part of the creative process. My favorite part is witnessing my work coming to life as I'm creating it, because it shows that I'm doing things properly.

4. When did you first discover etsy and begin selling? By the end of 2005, I was getting fed up with Ebay's constant-changing policies and how they kept jacking up their listing and FVF (Final Value Fees). So I began searching for other venues to sell my handmade items without having to pay an arm and a leg. By January 2006, I stumbled upon Etsy (while it was still in its beta stage) through another seller on LiveJournal. Their cheap listing fees and their friendly appearance all seemed too good to be true. I've never heard of the place, so I asked around to see if it was legit. When that checked out, I began listing after a month I joined.

5. How did you select your shop’s name? In the beginning, I had trouble coming up with a proper-fitting name for my label. I've played around with words and whatnot, but kept hitting a creative block. Because I was majoring in New Media in college, we were required to create an identity system using our namesake...so, I went with that. :) My friends and peers said that using my full name gave my shop a bit of a couture vibe, which is pretty neat.

6. To date, what project are you most proud of? The project I was most proud of was actually one of the first kimono I've ever made. It was meant to be a birthday present for a close friend of mine because I had trouble deciding what to get for her. It wasn't exactly the best looking kimono in my opinion, and it certainly wasn't accurate to the real deal, but what mattered most was that she genuinely loved it. And that was one of the main reasons why I continued to make kimono to this day. On a side note, I still owe said friend a brand-spankin' new kimono set, lol.

7. What mistake did you make while creating that taught you something valuable? That's a tough question, because I've made countless mistakes when I was working on my projects. But with every mistake, I learned something new and made sure not to repeat them in the future. I feel that learning things the hard way can be the most rewarding experience.

2. How did you become involved in your craft? I became interested in all crafting in high school. It was then that I learned how to knit, crochet and sew.

3. When did you first discover Etsy? I have always been involved in crafting for charity and while browsing the web in early 2007 I can upon Etsy.

4. How did you name your shop? My shop is named after my dog, Sallie. We got her at only 5 weeks old (she was one of eight in an abandoned litter) and looked like a little bear cub. She's an akita-shepherd mix who now weights 70 pounds!

6. What project are you most proud of? My favorite item is the pants and matching sweater I made for my new gret-neice, Claudia.

1. Give us a brief summary of your shop. What do you create? I like to joke that my shop has been brought to you by the letter "C". I sell crocheted items, cards and ceramic pieces.

2. How did you become involved in your craft? I've been taking ceramics classes since high school and have continued on and off throughout college. I learned how to crochet when I was younger but didn't really get seriously into it until I was 19, and I've been working on scarves, hats and blankets for about 6 years. I've always dabbled in creating handmade cards but the ones you see in my shop are a recent phenomenon that I've designed on the computer and sent out to be professionally printed.

3. Explain your favorite part of the creative process. I like creating. I'm not that good at sketching out ideas before I get started, but I like the actual process, whether it be actually throwing a pot on a wheel, designing a layout on the computer or actively crocheting an item. I also like looking at the finished product!

4. When did you first discover etsy and begin selling? I discovered Etsy last December and signed up as a buyer. I finally took the plunge late July and set up shop. So my shop has been open 3 months as of the end of October. :)

5. How did you select your shop’s name? My shop name is terribly original - it's my nickname of my first name with my first letter of my last name in front of it.

6. To date, what project are you most proud of? I think I am most proud of the cards I have printed in my shop. Like I said before, I've usually just made handmade cards from different types and colors of paper which I still make for myself. 1. Give us a brief summary of your shop. What do you create? I create resin jewellery, and my aim is to create pieces that will appeal to a wider audience that you may initially not be expecting!

2. How did you become involved in your craft? What motivated you to try it? It's not very popular here in the UK, but I plan to change that with my magazine articles, lessons and potentially a book. I was originally inspired by making plastic art jewellery from acrylic and the like. I didn't study art and design, so I went trawling the Internet to find some more information. I found a tutorial on making mixed media bezels and sealing with resin, and it escalated from there!

3. Explain your favorite part of the creative process. I particularly like making the moulds as you don't know what they will look like and if they will work until the Vinamould has cooled. I also like the "pop" of pushing the pieces out of the polyethylene moulds!

4. When did you first discover etsy and begin selling? I started with my other shop kerrydogs.etsy.com in July 2007 when I was looking for venues to sell my photography work. I've pretty much abandoned that shop now!

5. How did you select your shop’s name? PennyDog is the name of my business, which is named after my retired greyhound. I donate a portion of all sales to the Retired Greyhound Trust in the UK to thank them for all the treatment they provided free of charge for her when we adopted her.

6. To date, what project are you most proud of? I had a problem with my Citrus pendant (in my shop) in that when sanded and varnished it was a little bit misty. With a lot of TLC and some T-Cut and quite a lot of time, I managed to sort this problem out! 7. What mistake did you make while creating that taught you something valuable? I have learnt that some things float and some sink in the process, so guage this before rushing in! Also I learnt that too much dye stop the pieces from curing!

1. Give us a brief summary of your shop. What do you create? I create and sell fun and unique paper products which are often bought as gag gifts.

2. How did you become involved in your craft? What motivated you to try it? I was educated in graphic design and typography and have been working in design in one form or another for over 20 years. I have always been making fun and weird things for friends and family and it suddenly dawned upon me that maybe other people would be interested in them too. Luckily they were!

3. Explain your favorite part of the creative process. New ideas sit around in my head for months at a time clogging my brain so my favorite part is when they are ready to come out and turn into real products. Making them look good and attractive to other people is always a challenge and by far the most fun part of running the shop. I’m always evaluating my existing ideas and looking for ways to improve them. It’s an ongoing process that will probably never end.

4. When did you first discover etsy and begin selling? I stumbled across Etsy via the blog Design Sponge. Grace had featured several Etsy artists and so I thought I’d click and go take a look at this place. From there I became an instant addict (buyer!) and it was another 9 months or so before I decided to sell too.

5. How did you select your shop’s name? My shop name is a combination of two nicknames from school and work. Everyone that knows me calls me one name or the other so I combined them for Etsy. I think it’s a fun and energetic name that reflects my shop perfectly.

6. To date, what project are you most proud of? I’m most proud of my Birthday Lites simply because it was the longest and hardest project to complete. I have started to extend the Birthday Lites range to add different shapes and looking to collaborate with some Etsy artists to make special editions. I love making them

7. What mistake did you make while creating that taught you something valuable? I think the biggest mistake is thinking you have made something so wonderful and then finding absolutely nobody wants to buy it. Plugging away at something that won’t sell just because you’re stubborn is not a good idea. It is much easier to give it up and work on something new.

1. Give us a brief summary of your shop. What do you create? I create one-of-a-kind jewerly using sterling silver, gemstones, glass beads, and any other bits and bobs that appeal to me!

2. How did you become involved in your craft? What motivated you to try it? I was first itnroduced to jewelry making by my grandmother. She had her own jewelry repair and pearl stringing business in NYC. I can still remember her coming to visit and bringing lots of shiny jewelry wrapped in bits of toilet paper!
3. Explain your favorite part of the creative process. My favorite part is getting the idea, the "light", or the will-this-work moment. Sometimes ideas hit me at the strangest time, so I've started carrying a notebook with me so I can capture my ideas. sometimes my idea exceeds my ability, but it's still fun to try!

4. When did you first discover etsy and begin selling? I discovered Etsy this summer and just opened my shop about one month ago. I've learned so much and am loving it!

5. How did you select your shop’s name? I wanted my shop name to represent what I do - so I had to have the word "silver" in it somewhere. Then I thought I wanted something that had a we-mean-business connotation, so I thought the "studio" part of my name conveyed that.

6. To date, what project are you most proud of? I'm most proud of my green rectangle ring, because I've had the center stone for so long, but until recently wasn't able to bezel set. So I'm proud that now I can make my own bezel and turn it into a ring!

7. What mistake did you make while creating that taught you something valuable? I tend to cut too little of whatever I'm using -- too little wire, too little sterling sheet. I've learned that having a little extra at the end is waaay better than not having enough.

1. Give us a brief summary of your shop. What do you create? I make necklaces, earrings, rings, magnets, pony tail holders and keychains using bottle caps with a sealed image. I also make sealed bottle caps that are ready to use for DIY projects, and in addition, I offer a small selection of printable circle collages for bottle caps. I also do wholesale.

2. How did you become involved in your craft? What motivated you to try it? I got the idea a couple of years ago from a jewelry making book but didn't try it out until about a year ago. I got into it to try something new.

3. Explain your favorite part of the creative process. Coming up with new ideas!

4. When did you first discover etsy and begin selling? I discovered Etsy about two years ago. I heard about it from a sellers forum that I used to belong to. I started out selling supplies but recently closed down my supply shop to concentrate on creating more. I used to sell on eBay.

5. How did you select your shop’s name? When I opened this shop, my intent was to sell earrings. I tried it for about 4 months and didn't sell a thing, so I switched my shop concept to bottle caps. I named the shop after Tucson's nickname-Old Pueblo. I really would like to change it to Bottle Caps Galore.

The Donation Basket

On Friday, September 12th, the completed Etsy Handmade basket was given to the President of our local NOCC (National Ovarian Cancer Coalition) for the Walk/Run event. The race itself will be held Sept. 20th and the basket will be part of a silent auction to raise money for awareness.

I can tell you, Gini was quite pleased with our donations! She was surprised at how "full and beautiful" it was, and several items caught her direct attention. :)

Putting the basket together was a challenge. I purchased a basket woven with recycled newspaper, along with ribbons and shrink-wrap. Putting everything together was like a giant puzzle - I was careful to display everything in the most flattering way possible.

My pictures aren't the greatest, but I assure you the basket got rave reviews from everyone who saw it! I actually brought it to work (this is where Gini came to pick it up) and several of my coworkers are now aware of Etsy and the donors of this basket. Diana loved the bottlecap necklaces! Bonnie thought the Lady Lights were hilarious, Gini loved the tablerunner, and Sue fell in love with the coral and silver bracelet. Everything recieved a compliment that day!

I am hoping to bring two of my great loves (Ovarian cancer charities & Etsy) together!
As a 10 year ovca survivor, I support the local NOCC (National Ovarian Cancer Coalition). This September 20th is the PureOlogy & NOCC Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer Walk/Run. During race day (estimated attendance 10,000+) a silent auction is held to raise funds for the cause. Donated goods are bid on (and seen) by thousands of people.
I am bringing a gift basket together with items donated by fellow Etsy artisans.
Personally, I'm donating jewelry, as well as the packaging and basket.
If you'd like to donate anything, please send me a convo. I will ask that your item be shipped with any business cards, etc. so that everyone who sees the basket will know what shop it came from. It would also be helpful if you could tell me the value of each item so I can give them an "total value" placed on the basket. Once the basket is finished, I will post a photo for everyone to see.
This could be a HUGE success and promotional opportunity. At a previous race, my cousin won a basket and paid $85 when it was valued at only $15. She was in a bidding war that lasted till the very last second of the auction. Thousands of people viewed every item on that table.

1. Give us a brief summary of your shop. What do you create?

I have 2 shops.. Rainwolf.etsy.com has all my travel photography and I hope to have some artwork up soon as well.and RainwolfCrafts.etsy.com has my family crafts. My mom knits and crochets, I grow herbs and spices, and anything else we make.I do need to retake all photos in the crafts shop.. (I have not updated it in awhile and took quick photos so they are not my best.)

2. How did you become involved in your craft? What motivated you to try it?

My family has been taking photographs since 1920's it is a natural thing for the kids to take up and learn photography. I started when I was 9 or 10 and learned along the way. I always enjoy creating art but was never really "great" at anything I've tried such as drawing, painting, clay pottery, etc.. I was/am good at these things but did not stand out in any of these forms. I did not really think about my photography as a "Art" until people started trying to buy prints from me for thier walls or as gifts. I then started to sell prints to people who knew about my photographs and my love of travel. After selling many prints to friends and thier friends I decided to try to sell my prints to the public. However as I work on weekends so could not attend any of the fairs or farmers markets. I do take prints down to the Pike Place Market when I can but not often enough since I am either working or traveling. I then relizing that if I wanted to sell my photography I needed to either get my work into a Gallery or sell online. I researched Galleries and found that they tend to double the price of any art they sell so I decided to try selling online.

3. Explain your favorite part of the creative process.

I love capturing the unusual presectives that people tend to miss as well as the amazing views that we can see in the world around us. Bringing the world to people to experience is what I love about photography. The more I travel the more I want others to experience the world with me.

4. When did you first discover etsy and begin selling?

My mom went to a family gathering and talked to RightAsRainCreations about etsy and then told me about etsy. Since I have been trying to find a venue that I liked I researched etsy and I liked the ideas and community that I found. I started with my shop rainwolfcrafts because I had originally thought to have all my items in one shop. Later I found that it was better to have a second shop just for my photography and art rather then to have them all in the same shop.

5. How did you select your shop’s name?

I have had the name rainwolf as a nickname, online name or business name since the early 90's. Rain comes from a couple places.. 1. I live in Seattle and 2 when I visited my cousin in sacramento during a mid summer heat wave (thinking I'd have a nice tan) it started to rain the day after I arrived and stopped raining a day before I left. My cousin then started calling me rain and asking me to visit when ever they needed rain. :}The wolf part comes from my love of wolves and my collection of wolf items in my home. I am a animall person and love the traits and society that wolves have. I also have spent time studying and experiencing Native Northwest American culture. I developed a love for Native arts and studied that as well. That is how I started using the name Rainwolf as a nickname that transfered to online then to business name.

6. Do you sell anywhere outside of etsy? If so, where?

I try and sell at the Pike Place Market when I can. My mom, who is retired and enjoys selling, will take my work to fairs or markets that my metal artist friend attends.

7. To date, what project are you most proud of?

I am proud of all my work but I have to say the jellyfish photographs are my favorite. They were the hardest to capture as it is dark in the exhbit and with glass you can not use a flash.

8. What mistake did you make while creating that taught you something valuable?

I took shots and then forgot or did not write down where/what that photograph was. This created a problem when people wanted to know where/what that was. So now I keep a journal of all my travels, where I was and what i saw so that I can correctly identify what area, place or etc that i have photographed. Case in point.. My orange jellyfish photos turned out amazing and I have no clue as to what kind of jellyfish it was or where it was from. I only know it was a short special exhbit shown at the Osaka Aquarium.

9. Are there any other mediums you’ve tried or would like to try in the future?

I love trying anything! One thing I love about traveling is that I get to see and sometimes try different things such as art. I hope to start drawing/painting again but I do not know when.

1. Give us a brief summary of your shop. What do you create?
Hi! My real name is Linda and I love to make necklaces! Most of the necklaces I design and create contain vintage beads and other vintage components. I suppose I “specialize” in using materials not normally intended for jewelry in my necklace designs.

2. How did you become involved in your craft?
What motivated you to try it?A friend of mine gave me 2 boxes of vintage costume jewelry that had belonged to his mother. He knew I liked crafting, and thought I could do something with the jewelry. I fell in love with the unique vintage styles, but wanted to add a contemporary flair. I used his gift(s) to create my own necklaces, and discovered I had found my passion!

3. Explain your favorite part of the creative process.
Actually, I love the entire process! Figuring the lay-out, or design of each necklace is the most creative part. I get an idea instantly, but revise and refine it until I’m happy with the total look. The actual assembly is often the most time-consuming part, especially with more challenging pieces involving wire-work, pinning, linking, or collage. My favorite part is when I finish a necklace and it’s just as I envisioned it. Then, I hope it will make someone happy to own it.

4. When did you first discover Etsy and begin selling?
I initially sold my jewelry on eBay for 5 years. Last year, a friend of mine who also makes jewelry, told me about Etsy. We more or less made the move to Etsy at the same time, and are both still there and happy we made the move!

5. How did you select your shop’s name?
An anomaly is defined as: “a deviation from the common rule, type, or form.” I thought that was an accurate description of both myself and my jewelry, thus, “MsAnomaly” seemed the logical choice.

6. Do you sell anywhere outside of Etsy? If so, where?
I currently rent a space in a consignment shop inside our local mall. The store is called “The Gift House” and is in the Eastwood Mall in Niles, OH.

7. To date, what project are you most proud of?
It’s a funny one, but I love it. I call it my “Friends” necklace, and the idea came to me when I combined a miniature cuckoo clock , a pair of plastic doll hands, Ren and Stimpy charms, and a 50’s “advice for young women” charm from a vintage bracelet. 8. What mistake did you make while creating that taught you something valuable?
I learned that vintage has a mind of its own, and a “plan B (C,D,E,etc.)” is often needed. The actual assembly process hasn’t always worked as I had planned due to the original design of the vintage materials. I’ve learned that if it doesn’t work one way, keep trying! Also, expect some losses. Vintage materials are often more fragile than they look!

9. Are there any other mediums you’ve tried or would like to try in the future?
I would love to learn to make my own beads. I would like to give polymer clay a try and see what I can do with it!

I am co-leader of the Etsy Beagle Street Team, and am currently running a thread in the Etsy Teams Forum. The post is called “Meet the Beagles,” and is already at “Part 3.” The idea of the thread is to introduce our team members, their shops, and their pets. The team became official in Oct. ’07, and we now have 71 members. I do have a blogspot that I am horrible about keeping up with, and have recently joined Flickr, which is also overdue for my attention. Both are under the name “MsAnomaly.”

1. Give us a brief summary of your shop. What do you create?

My shop is full of the most wonderfully scented Bath and Body Products. I have bar soap, body wash, body butter, bath teas, bath salts, lip balms, shampoo, conditioner, fun soap for kids, and gift baskets. I also have seeds from my own garden. The seeds have been quite a hit and started selling well back in January!

2. How did you become involved in your craft? What motivated you to try it?

I have always loved making bath and body products for myself, and for my family. I have researched many, many recipes, to the delight of everyone who received them! I still love researching new recipes and I spend way too much time in bath and body shops.

3. Explain your favorite part of the creative process.

I think my most favorite part of creating is the process in trying to show my product in the way that I see it. For instance, taking pictures. I struggle with taking pictures and some times I take up to 50 pictures to get it “right”. I want others to see the beauty in my products and I love this challenge.

4. When did you first discover etsy and begin selling?

1. Give us a brief summary of your shop. What do you create?
My shop is all felted items, mostly needle felted. I make lots of natural toys, art dolls and items of shameless geekery. The Mad Scientist with Zombie Lab Assistant has been very popular. Right now I am on a mushroom kick, I have been adding mushroom themed items every day this week. My kids want me to make ninja and pirate mushrooms, we'll see if those happen soon or not. They come up with some fun ideas and keep me busy. So between them and my ADD I am never out of ideas to create. Now time to create is another story...That said I am feeling ambitious and plan to launch a second store on Etsy for my art dolls this summer.

2. How did you become involved in your craft? What motivated you to try it?
I have been working with wool for years; first as a hand spinner and then as a knitter. One spring day in 2004 I took my kids to a local sheep farm (Rainbow Fleece Farm in New Glarus, WI) for their spring shearing event. There was a woman demonstrating needle felting and plenty of materials for people to give it a try. Five minutes in I was hooked! I purchased a small kit and started to play. Now I am the person teaching at that farm getting others hooked!

3. Explain your favorite part of the creative process.
I love watching a ball of loose wool slowly take form and transform into a creation. Whether art or toy the same joy is there for me. I just love the whole process of the actual felting. I also love to see something, especially from nature, and think how I could change it with needle felting. One of my favorite art projects is a series of leaf people. I needle felt a leaf shape, using a real leaf as a guide, and build a face on the surface of the felt leaf. Each type of leaf has a different personality to me and I love seeing that come out as the leaf face takes shape.

4. What inspires you?
I find inspiration all over the place. It is one of the joys of being ADHD, things are always catching your fancy. My partner is a physicist and he is always looking at the world in terms of its scientific function and making connections from that. Now I find myself seeing the world in shapes and how I can play with them, and transform them with felt. When I want to work on a new doll I am constantly looking at people's faces and taking note of the shapes. The more interesting the face the better, funky characters and fantasy characters are way easier, and more interesting, than making young or beautiful characters.My kids also have no shortage of ideas for me. They seem to think that I can make anything out of wool. I am honored by their confidence in my ability.

5. When did you first discover etsy and begin selling?
I friend first showed it to me two years ago. She encouraged me to get a shop up and running with my own felt work. At first I was overwhelmed by the talent already established on Etsy. But I finally made a resolution to start a shop this year, and in January I finally did it. It took a couple of weeks for my first sale. When it came I did a happy dance all over the house, I still do. I hope that thrill never goes away. I am honored when I person chooses my work out of the thousands of sellers, artists and crafts people. I am still blown away by the range of talent available on Etsy. I am grateful that Etsy is a community rather than a competition. I love cooperative economics and Etsy does a great job of encouraging community, support and friendship among the sellers.

6. How did you select your shop’s name?
Purple is a sort of a signature color for me. My house is even purple, so that had to be part of the name. Most of my work has a fantasy element to it and I wanted to reflect that in the name. So after letting names play around in my head I set upon Purple Moon Fibers, fibers to reflect the wool.

7. Do you sell anywhere outside of etsy? If so, where?
I am starting to attend more craft fairs here in the Madison area. I will also be part of am open studio tour this spring, May 17 and 18 in Stoughton, WI (see http://www.creativemode.com/doorcreek.htm for more information)

I will be there with my art dolls and a few small whimsies. Right now because I am still home with a preschooler my studio time is limited. I hope over time to build an inventory so that I can get more stuff out in the world.

8. To date, what project are you most proud of?
It's very hard to choose a favorite; each has its own unique feel. It's kind of like asking which of your children do you like best. However if I had to choose it would be my gypsy fortune teller named Valdoma.

She is in my shop http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=8911568 I had fun doing all of the detail work and making the props for her. My son wanted me to do a doll with beads and we both worked together on her outfit. I also love her tiny tarot deck. I have gotten better at doing human faces since making her, but she was the most fun so far.

9. What mistake did you make while creating that taught you something valuable?
I have learned to not force the process, to go with the flow of a piece and let it evolve. If I sit down with a general idea instead of a fixed picture of a finished piece I am much happier with the results; it feels more organic that way. Early on I would create elaborate ideas, try to sketch them out and force them into being. This usually resulted in my breaking down in tears. There is much more joy when the wool and I cooperate and evolve together.I have also learned to stick with a piece, to keep working and to not be afraid to rip something apart and rebuild from the pieces. My poor dolls often get their eyes torn out and rebuilt. Eyes are so hard to do and so important to a piece.

10. Are there any other mediums you’ve tried or would like to try in the future?
I want to do more wet felting especially nuno felting where you felt the wool into silk fabric, just beautiful. I also want to do more wet felted vessels, to create intentional designs on the surface. There is a vessel with a classic labyrinth design kicking around in my head. This spring it may finally get to manifest.I realize that this is not a huge branching out, but I am a shameless wool addict.

I was inspired by Easter Eggs for my newest. I loved the crackle affect of the lavender beads and the iridescent white complimented it perfectly. :)

I created a new bracelet with green and blue glass butterflies. There is a lot of iridescence with this piece and it gets a lot of attention. I especially love the little leaf style toggle clasp. This piece reminds me of fairies in the deep forest.

Okay.... so maybe I have an active imagination. ;-)

I tend to design sporadically. I look at materials and bring them together as I go. I'm never very good at planning ahead, though I do get inspiration to start a project.... it just doesn't usually end up the way I first thought.

I had some porcelain beads.... it took only a glace for the robin's egg blue and red to jump out in perfect harmony.

I love bright colors together.

The soccer lanyard was my first official etsy sale! Thank goodness for sweet people who are willing to buy from those of no feedback!

Its a scary thing to sell your own creations. You open yourself up to criticism and/or praise--neither of which are easy to take. I've always made my own crafts thanks to my Grandmother's guiding hands. She and my grandPA raised my brother and I, so her way of keeping us busy was with gardening, crafts, and art. My brother is an excellent artist, I took more after crafting, and we both garden regularly. (Thanks Gramma!)

Rather than continue with my bad habit of starting several new craft projects with more supplies than goods, I decided to try and focus on what I truly loved doing most. Painting us up there, but beading has my heart. I enjoy the design process and I feel great satisfaction in wearing my creations. So, why not try and share? I've taken a deep breath and put myself and my wears out there.
